The Song Sparrow

One Feather at a Time — Ep. 15

The Song Sparrow is a small, streaked brown bird found throughout most of North America. It has a brown cap, a gray face, and a dark spot in the center of its breast. Its plumage varies across regions, but the overall pattern stays the same.

This sparrow lives in brushy areas, thickets, wetlands, and gardens. It usually stays close to the ground, searching for seeds and insects. Its diet changes with the seasons—seeds in winter and insects in spring and summer.

Nests are built low to the ground in grasses, shrubs, or dense plants. They are cup-shaped and well hidden. Females lay three to five eggs per brood, and more than one brood is common during the breeding season.

The Song Sparrow is named for its clear, musical song, which is used to mark territory and attract mates. Males often sing from exposed perches, making them easier to locate despite their camouflaged plumage.
